“Novus Annos” Short Story Competition 2018

We’re looking for writers of fiction stories. Think you can write a winning story in 2500 words or less? Enter the Space Coast Writers’ Guild/Brevard Authors’ Society first annual Novus Annos Short Story Competition (Contest).
The rules governing the Contest 2018 are as follows:
Eligibility: The Contest is open to all Brevard County residents 18 years old or above.
Submission Guidelines:
Opens: January 2, 2018

Entries must be received no later than February 28, 2018.
Genre - general/literary fiction, romance, historical fiction, mystery/suspense, horror, and science  based/alternative history. Children’s stories,explicit foul language and erotica will not be accepted. 
Submissions must be sent in MS Word format (DOC., DOCX), Times New Roman 11, double  spaced, with numbered pages and title at the top of each page.
Send as an e mail attachment to cfoley@scwg.org OR by USPS mail with your entry fee to Cindy Foley, 520 Heron Drive, Merritt Island, Florida 32952.
The US$10 entry fee must be sent by mail to Cindy Foley, 520 Heron Drive, Merritt Island, Fl. 32952. SCWG member discount $5. Please make checks or money order payable to the Space Coast Writers’ Guild. No entry will be accepted without receipt of the required fee.
Stories must be written in English, original, and unpublished up to the time the winners are declared. Stories must be not less than 1000 words and no more than 2500 words in length. Entries  exceeding the word limits will be disqualified.  Limited to one entry per person.
Cover page must accompany each entry and should include author’s name, contact information i.e. address, phone number, title of the story, and word count.
The author’s name should only appear on the cover page. No manuscripts will be returned.
All submissions are final. No changes or substitutions are allowed once your entry is received.
The top five winners will be notified by May 1, 2018. Awards will be presented at a special ceremony on May 26th at 10:00 AM, Central Public Library, Cocoa, FL.
SCWG & BAS Novus Annos Short Story Competition 2018
Judging
A SCWG and BAS team will complete the first round of selections. The top 10 final selections will then be judged by a Nea Mera Short Story Contest panel of four judges. Using a 5 point scoring matrix, the entries will be judged on the following elements: Quality of Narrative, Structure, Characterization, and Plot. Final decision will be based on the averaged total of the scores from the judges.
Prizes
One First Place Winner will receive
$250 and a Certificate of Award

The Second Place Winner will receive
$175 and a Certificate of Award

Indemnity:
By participating in this Contest, you agree to defend, indemnify and hold harmless the Sponsors, and their office bearers from any and all damages, injuries, claims, causes of action, or losses of any kind (including but not limited to lawyers’ fees) arising from your participation in the Contest, your violation of any term of these Contest rules, your violation of any third party right, including without limitation any copyright, property, or privacy right; or any claim that your submission caused damage to a third party.
Force Majuere clause:
The Sponsors are not liable for failure to perform their obligations under these rules if such failure is as a result of Acts of God (including natural disasters), Acts of War, civil unrest, usurped power or confiscation, terrorist activities, prevention of statutes, or interruption or massive and sustained failure of electricity, internet, or telephone service.
Any extension/reduction of contest and/or the judging window will be at the sole discretion of the organisers, and will be notified by e mail and on the website if extended.
